ABOUT US

Why Choose Us?

At Fluffy Spider Technologies, we build digital health solutions that are technically robust, standards-aligned, and ready for complex, real-world environments. With over two decades of experience in health IT, we’ve delivered integration, data management, and application development across both the Australian healthcare system and international projects.

Our leadership includes a Board Director of HL7 Australia and contributors to national standards development. That perspective informs how we work—bringing practical knowledge of frameworks, policy alignment, and a clear view of where interoperability is headed.

We work across public and private healthcare settings and understand the operational realities of both: legacy systems, hybrid data flows, and the distinct needs of clinicians, administrators, and patients. Whether we’re building something from the ground up or integrating into a production environment, our focus is on delivering stable, maintainable systems that will support long-term use.

Small by design, we work hands-on with clients and stay close to every project we deliver.

The Heart Foundation - SMART on FHIR App

OVERVIEW

From Development to Deployment: Trusted Experts in SMART on FHIR Solutions

The Heart Foundation engaged Fluffy Spider Technologies to support the transition and future development of the Aus CVD Risk-i Calculator, a SMART on FHIR mobile health app, initially built by CSIRO. As a trusted digital health partner, we took ownership of the application, preparing it for secure production deployment, long-term maintenance, and enhancement.

CHALLENGE

The application was developed to national interoperability standards (FHIR R4 and SMART on FHIR) but required a commercial partner to manage operational support, security, hosting, vendor onboarding, and future development—functions outside CSIRO’s research-focused mandate.

SOLUTION

Fluffy Spider Technologies assumed full technical responsibility for the Aus CVD Risk-i Calculator, transitioning it from a research-focused asset into a production-ready, maintainable application. Our team provided architectural consulting to prepare the system for secure deployment, with a focus on scalability, performance, and alignment to national digital health standards, including FHIR R4 and SMART on FHIR standards.

To ensure operational resilience, we implemented secure cloud hosting, established proactive monitoring and alerting frameworks, and developed incident response procedures to maintain continuous service availability. We also deployed and configured Ontoserver to deliver SNOMED CT terminology services, ensuring structured clinical data interoperability and future-proofing the platform for national healthcare system integration.

Beyond infrastructure, we are engaged to lead the ongoing development and enhancement of the Aus CVD Risk-i Calculator itself. Our role includes extending SMART on FHIR capabilities, improving system usability, supporting vendor integrations, and evolving the application to meet future clinical and research requirements. This work ensures that the Heart Foundation’s investment remains aligned with the latest interoperability standards and continues to deliver value to both clinicians and patients over time.

OUTCOME

A production-ready, standards-compliant SMART on FHIR application now actively supports cardiovascular research and patient engagement initiatives. With Fluffy Spider providing technical stewardship, the Heart Foundation gains a scalable, maintainable platform aligned with Australian digital health frameworks—delivered and supported by a trusted industry partner.

This case study demonstrates how SMART on FHIR applications can be transitioned from research-grade prototypes to production-ready solutions with the right technical and operational stewardship. By taking ownership of the application lifecycle, Fluffy Spider ensured the Heart Foundation’s investment in standards-based digital health could scale securely, remain maintainable, and continue to support long-term clinical and research outcomes. This model of structured technical ownership and standards-based evolution positions Fluffy Spider to deliver long-term value across future digital health initiatives.
